Bikepacking in Yorkshire

The Calder Divide Trail is a long distance circular route across 12 valleys, 6 moors and 1 floodplain in West Yorkshire. It is a multi-day adventure along the watershed of the River Calder.

From ancient bridleways across the Pennine moors to new gravel paths in the Southern Washlands and on through the center of small towns like Hebden Bridge and Marsden this is an epic trail through a diverse and stunning landscape.

The Trail

From gravel tracks to cobbled lanes, over moorland singletrack and along the urban fringe, this northern landscape has it all.

The words ‘divide’ and ‘trail’ conjure up images of a narrow path on an exposed mountain ridge with views stretching out in all directions. The Calder Divide Trail is set amongst the South Pennine moors and valleys. There are no mountain peaks or broad forests but we do have mile after mile of bridleways, causeways and greenways set between “the green moss and the purple heather”.

Why have an event?

The CDT event was set up with two aims.

Firstly to introduce riders to the diverse landscape and range of trails we have in West Yorkshire by offering four route options - 2 for Gravel bikes and 2 for MTB’s. You can ride the trail completely self-supported in one go, wild camp up on the moors, bikepack to our farm campsite at the half way point or take the option of luggage transfer of your gear to the camping village.

Secondly to raise enough money to fund one day in the life of the hospice where our riding buddy Will Norman and our close friend Mel Williamson had their last few days.

The daily running costs of Overgate Hospice in Elland, West Yorkshire, is in the order of £2,000 a day. The 2022 event with 90 riders raised £2,250 for the local hospice, in 2023 we donated £4,850 as over 200 riders signed on, in 2024 we donated £2,437 with a max of 100 riders and in 2025 we donated £2,240 with 110 riders signed on.

In total the event has raised £11,777.
